When your blood sugar levels are high, your breath can get a fruity smell. Dogs can be trained to detect blood sugar levels and alert you when the blood sugar level is too high.

I came across this lovely story about the dog Diva that lives with a family in Florida. Their 12 year old daughter, Hunter, is a diabetic. The dog sleeps close to her and will get up several times during the night to smell her breath. If the daughter’s blood sugar levels are high or low, Diva will alert her parents.

Diabetic service dogs like Diva are trained by All Purpose Canines. There has been a huge demand for these type of dogs, so they have a long waiting list.
